How to Use Oasis Floral Foam for Stunning Arrangements

Oasis floral foam is the professional florist’s foundation material, the green sponge-like block that holds stems in position, provides water for fresh flowers, and enables complex three-dimensional arrangements that would be impossible to achieve in a standard vase. Understanding how to use it correctly transforms your floral design results.

What is Oasis Floral Foam?

Oasis is a brand name that has become synonymous with floral foam generally, similar to how Sellotape became a generic term for adhesive tape. Floral foam is a water-absorbent phenolic resin foam available in blocks, spheres, rings, and other shapes specifically designed for different arrangement types. When saturated with water, it keeps fresh flower stems hydrated for days while holding them securely in any position.

How to Properly Soak Floral Foam

This is the step most beginners get wrong. Never force floral foam underwater; this traps air pockets and creates dry zones that will kill flower stems. Instead, place the dry foam on the surface of a deep container of water and allow it to sink naturally as it absorbs water. This process takes two to five minutes depending on block size. The foam is ready when it has sunk completely and no dry patches remain visible.

Preparing Your Container

Trim the soaked foam to fit your vessel with approximately 2-3cm extending above the rim  this allows stems to be inserted at downward angles for a natural cascading effect. Secure the foam in your container with waterproof floral tape crossed over the foam and attached to the vessel edges. For heavy arrangements, use a foam anchor or adhesive clay on the base of the foam as additional security.

Inserting Stems Correctly

Cut stems at a 45-degree angle with sharp scissors or a floral knife  this increases the surface area for water uptake and prevents the stem from blocking itself by sitting flat on the foam base. Insert each stem with a single confident push to the required depth, usually at least 3-4cm into the foam. Never re-insert a stem into the same hole as the enlarged hole no longer holds the stem firmly or conducts water effectively.

Using Floral Foam for Artificial Arrangements

Dry floral foam (available in grey or brown) is specifically designed for artificial flower arrangements, providing the same stem-holding properties without requiring water saturation. This is ideal for permanent artificial arrangements in UAE settings where water would damage furniture or where arrangements are displayed in sealed vessels.
